Cabinet approval for renaming of Pondicherry to Puducherry

New Delhi, May 26 (UNI) The Union Cabinet today approved a proposal to introduce a Bill in Parliament to change the name of the Union Territory of Pondicherry to 'Puducherry'.

Briefing mediapersons after the union cabinet met under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said that the people of pondicherry have been demanding renaming of the UnionTerritory to Puducherry, as was known in ancient times.

It came to be pronounced as Pondicherry by foreign rulers. The legislative Assembly of Pondicherry has already passed an official resolution to this effect, Mr Dasmunsi said.
