New documentary chronicles legendary Shillong band

Shillong, May 25 (UNI) The passion for music among the people in this picturesque city now finds expression in a documentary film that chronicles the journey of a music band that has inspired generations of music lovers here.

Made by young filmmaker Shivajee Ashim Das, the film 'Great Society' showcases the life and times of celebrated musician of the region Mr Lou Majaw, who along with his friends formed the band 'Great Society' way back in 1979.

It started like most other bands - a group of friends jamming together and making music, mostly Rock, Blues and Reggae.

''We wanted to showcase Mr Majaw's love and dedication for music that is exemplary. He has been an icon for people like me,'' Das told reporters here after a special screening of the documentary.

''The film is a tribute to a band whose music and songs inspired generations to live their dreams. True to the name of the band, they created a society that will live long after they are gone,'' said Das.

Mr Majaw's 'Great Society' that enthralled Western music lovers all over India in the 1980s, has been organising the birthday celebrations of legendary English Musician Bob Dylan in Shillong on May 24 each year for 34 years without a break.

Mr Majaw, 59, rocked the show once again last evening at the Bob Dylan birthday bash that also aimed at spreading awareness about HIV/AIDS.

Other artists to perform at the celebration included India-based English musician Liz Cotton, Delhi-based music director and guitarist Arjun Sen, musician and painter Lew Hilt, drummer Nondon Bagchi and the father-son duo of Anjan and Neel Dutt from Kolkata.
