UP power situation improves; power cuts continue

Lucknow, May 24: Despite the under-control frequency of Northern Grid enabling power hungry Uttar Pradesh to withdraw enough power from central sector, the gap between demand and supply remains in the region of 1,800 Mw, prompting authorities to resort to rostering.

While the combined generation in UP from Obra, Anpara, Panki, Harduaganj and Paricha was at about 2,200 Mw with peak hr demand in excess of 7,000 Mw, the peak hr shortfall was about 1,800 Mw after import of 3,000 Mw from central sector.

Almost all rural and some urban areas had to be subjected to power cuts, in order to save the Grid from failure.

The situation is much better compared to last month's scenario when the frequency of Grid was constantly at about 48 Htz and the shortfall, at times, touching 3,000 Mw.

Since the generation in Naptha Jhakhri Hydro Plant in Himachal Pradesh is restored, Northern Grid is in comparatively satisfactory condition, according to sources here.

Meanwhile, the 200 Mw five units of Singrauli power plant of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) restarted generation today, much to the relief of the power authorities. A crisis situation had arisen after the units had stopped generation putting the Grid into danger. Subsequently, the withdrawal by UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) towards its quota had to be controlled.

UPPCL sources told UNI that the power situation in UP had improved with Northern Grid frequency hovering around 50 Htz, a relatively safe frequency. UP was getting enough withdrawal to reduce rostering to aaffordable level, they maintained.
