PM resolves not to ignore legacy of violence in J

Srinagar, May 24 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today regretted that ''some shameful acts'' had occurred in Jammu and Kashmir which have no place in democratic governance, but expressed determination and resolve to defeat the nefarious designs of elements indulging in ''terrorist acts and atrocities'' against people of the state.

In his opening remarks at the second round-table conference here, Dr Singh asserted that every resident of Jammu and Kashmir, irrespective of religion and region, should lead a life of dignity free from oppression, poverty and fear.

For the UPA government, the Prime Minister said the welfare of Jammu and Kashmir was of top most priority. ''Putting the tragic memories of the past behind us, it is our endeavour that we work together to build a prosperous future for the state,'' he added.

''However, while expressing this wish, I have to say with great sorrow that within the state there are some elements who do not wish this dream to become a reality. Their inhuman acts have cost many lives and destroyed many families. Who these elements are, we all know well,'' Dr Singh said.

He said such activities would only make the resolve even stronger to ensure that every resident of Jammu and Kashmir was protected from ''terrorist acts and atrocities''.

''I know that you all are with me. We are prepared to take every step towards achieving this objective. We condemn such activities and will ensure that these plans fail. All our sympathies are with those families who have been affected by these assaults,'' he added.

The Prime Minister regretted that some ''shameful acts'' have occurred in the state which have no place in democratic governance.

''I know that this is a legacy of the violence through which the state has lived. But, that does not mean that we will in anyway ignore this,'' he added.

Dr Singh said Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has assured the public that full legal action would be taken against those who were responsible for these incidents and the Centre fully supported the state government in this regard.
