Parliament approves Electricity Bill to repeal 1980 Act

New Delhi, May 23 (UNI) Parliament today approved The Union Duties of Excise (Electricity) Distribution Repeal Bill, 2006, with the Rajya Sabha returning it without conducting any debate.

The Bill was moved in the House by Finance Minister P Chidambaram, who said it had already been passed by the Lok Sabha and it be returned.

Last week, the Lower House had passed the bill, seeking to repeal the Union Duties of Excise (Electricity) Distribution Act, 1980.

Moving the bill, Mr Chidambaram had said the Act had become redundant since 1984. The P C Jain Committee also recommended repeal of the Act.
