More agitation in favour of reservation

Chennai, May 23 (UNI) The agitation favouring 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) gained momentum, with several organisations staging demonstrations in support in different parts of the city today.

The pro quota supporters were of the opinion that the Centre should implement the reservation in toto for OBCs in elite educational institutions without any delay to ensure social justice.

The Campaign Committee for Reservation, headed by Convener G R Ravindranath staged a demonstration near Memorial Hall.

Various political party leaders, mass organisations, NGos and Medicos participated in the stir.

Later, a human chain was formed in which Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) workers, including general secretary Thol Thirmavalavan participated.

CPI state secretary Tha Pandian, former state secretary R Nallakkannu, Dalit leader and Puthiya Tamizhagam president K Krishnasamy, Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P Nedumaran were among others who joined the human chain.

Similar human chains were formed across the state.

The ICF/OBC Welfare Association staged a demonstration to condemn those opposing reservation. It also thanked the Central government for ushering in reservation for OBCs and congratulated former Prime Minister V P Singh and Union Human Resource Minister Arjun Singh for taking the initiative in this regard.

All India Telecommunication Backward Classes Employee's Welfare Association staged a demonstration during the lunch hour in front of the General Post Office demanding the Centre to implement 27 per cent reservation to OBCs in all Central Government educational institutions.

Employees of Postal, RMS, and MMS also participated.
