India worried about escalation of violence in Sri Lanka
New Delhi, May 23 (UNI) India is deeply worried about any escalation of violence in Sri Lanka and favours flexibiity from both sides--Colombo and the LTTE.
Official sources said here today that a major effort needed to be made to prevent any escalation in violence in the island nation which would otherwise have a fallout on Indian shores.
There was also need for flexibility on the part of both sides.
Any escalation in violence would have socio-economic consequences as already about 2000 people have reached Tamil Nadu fearing escalation in violence while hundreds more are waiting.
The sources said that so far the focus had entirely been on ceasefire. But there was the larger question of restoration of peace and the ability to sustain ceasefire.
''It is in India's inteest to prevent escalation,'' the sources said while expressing support for Norwegian mediation.
