India cautiously optimistic on Nepal
New Delhi, May 23 (UNI) India is cautiously optimistic about the situation in Nepal and believes that the united front put up by the Seven Party Alliance (SPA) in restoring democracy in the Himalayan kingdom would have to be replicated in bringing Maoists on board the political mainstream.
Official sources today said India was encouraged at the way things were going in Nepal which were all ''positive signs.'' However, the challenge now was to negotiate with the Maoists.
''It is extremely important for the SPA to sit together and discuss among other things how to bring about a negotiated settlement with the Maoists. The same united front needs to be there with the Maoists as was in place at the time of bringing back democracy,'' the souces added.
They said it should be made very clear to Maoists that they had to abandon violence and any electoral exercise must take place without the ''shadow of the gun.'' Asked whether India would have any role at this time, the sources said this was not the time for neutrality or mediation.
The immediate challenge was to deal with the Maoists and development of economy which had taken a beating during the past few months.
The international community, specially India, would have to come to Nepal's support in its economic development.
''Indian government is in touch with the Nepalese government and they are working out major requirements,'' the sources added.
