Hussain's controversial paintings irk London's Hindu community

London, May 23 (UNI) The exhibition of Maqbool Fida Husain's allegedly controversial paintings at Asia House in London has irked the Indian coummnity, particularly of Hindu faith in Britain.

The Hindu Forum Britain (HFB), an umbrella oragnisation of over 270 groups, has asked Asia House to cancel the exhibition. According to a report some one tried to throw ink over a painting as a mark of protest.

Mr Husain, who withdrew the painting representing India earlier this year following complaints from a charity auction to raise money for the victims of the South Asia earthquake, could now face a protest rally on May 27.

HFB alleged that ''offensive paintings showing Hindu Gods and Goddesses in objectionable pose's has outraged Hindus around the world. Many leading figures of the Indian community in the UK have also felt aggrieved.'' It is also said that some community groups were dismayed that the Indian High Commissioner chose to inaugurate the exhibition.

Ramesh Kallidai, HFB secretary general said, ''Asia House claims to be the premier pan Asian organisation in Britain aimed to promote greater understanding of the rich and varied Asian cultures and economies but instead, by displaying these works, they are causing distress and hurt amongst Hindus across Britain and the world.

Supporting the protests organised by the Hindu Human Rights group, we plan to make representations to Asia House to urge them to withdraw this exhibition.'' UNI XC SB KP1558
