Bio-diversity day observed in Mizoram
Aizawl, May 23 (UNI) Mizoram chief secretary Haukhum Hauzel today emphasised the need to change traditional Jhum (slash/burn) cultivation for protecting the state's bio-diversity.
Hauzel was chairing a programme to mark the international bio-diversity day.
''Every year farmers cut down good forests and then burn them.
This has not only hurt the land but also destroying the eco-system,'' he said.
''These practices must be stopped immediately,'' he said.
Speaking on the occasion, forest minister Dr Lalthangliana also emphasised the need to conserve forests.
He added the state has a reserve forest area of 4.7 per cent out of the total territory. However, man's greed for quick money has taken its toll on the animal species.
The two-day programme, is jointly organised by state's environment and forest department, Mizoram University's biodiversity and environmental science department and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development.
