Law Revision Commission to be set up in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, May 21 : Kerala Law Minister M Vijayakumar today said the government would set up a ''Law Revision Commission'' to monitor and to make necessary revisions of certain outdated laws in the state.

Participating in a meet-the-press programme organised by the Press Club here, the minister said many of the laws required a detailed scanning and setting up of a commission would help to scrutinise such laws and make the necessary changes.

Criticising certain Government pleaders of ignorance, he said improper presentation of cases by them had created a lot of embarrassing situations for the government.

He said the government was planning to set up a monitoring system to look into the laevyers' performance and stern action would be taken if any lapses were found on their part.

The monitoring system would be set up at the Advocate General's Office, Law Department and Law Secretary, besides the Law Minister's office.

He said the government would also set up a ''Legal Data Bank'', the first of its kind in the country to make available the state's laws to the public.

He also said the appointment of the government pleaders would be based on merit, instead of their nominations by political parties.

Stating the Judicial system in the state was one of the oldest one that still followed the colonial style, he said steps would be taken to make changes in the system and a cell would be formulated for the purpose.

He said the Institute of Parliamentary Studies would be revived and made as a National Institute.
