No change in student intake in IITG yet
Guwahati, May 20 (UNI) The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, (IIT-G) has no immediate plans of increasing student intake in the coming session even as the quota row intensified across the country.
Talking to UNI over the phone, IIT-G public relations officer Dhruba Jyoti Sharma today said the institute has not yet received any intimation regarding increase in student intake from the coming session from the IIT council.
Mr Sharma said, ''The IIT national council will decide the increase in the number of students admitted here. We are yet to receive any communication from them.'' The new session starts from July and any rise in the number of seats would be known by June, he added.
The IIT-Kharagpur has already announced an increase in student enrollment from the new session.
The IIT-G currently enrolls over 350 students annually. Of these, about 220 are UG students, 130 PG students and the rest are those pursuing PhD.
The on-going quota row has led to speculations that the IITs and IIMs would increase student intake to maintain status quo in the number of seats for general category aspirants.
The IIT-G has provisions for 15 per cent reservation for Scheduled Caste (SC) students and 7.5 per cent for Scheduled Tribe (ST) students.
The proposal to introduce 27 per cent quota for OBC candidates was met with protests and class boycotts in mid-April this year at the IIT-G.
