NIO scientist gets POGO-SCOR research fellowship in USA

Panaji, May 20 (UNI) Dr Mangesh Gauns, a senior scientist at the prestigious National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) has bagged the US-based POGO-SCOR fellowship for training in microzooplankton grazing and flow cytometry analysis of marine picoplankton.

The scientist, with over 21 research papers to his credit besides being a CSIR Young Scientist awardee, would be trained under the supervision of Dr Michael Sieracki at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, Maine, USA.

The Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO) in collaboration with the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) provide fellowships to promote training and capacity building leading towards a global oceans observation scheme, NIO official sources said here today.

Meanwhile, a technical officer G Parthiban of NIO has been awarded doctoral degre (Ph.D.) by the Goa University for his thesis 'Quaternary sedimentation in the central Indian Ocean: Response to Himalayan Weathering and Climate Variation'.

The down-core variation in minerology and chemistry of sediments from central Indian Ocean basin are shown to have broadly preserved the records of tectonic evolution of the Himalayas, past climate change and oceanic productivity, it said.
