IIM-C, IIT-Kharagpur to increase number of seats
Kolkata, May 20 (UNI) With the quota controversy hovering over all major educational institutes of the country, the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) and the Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT) Kharagpur have decided to increase the number of seats from 2006 onwards.
IIM-C has decided to increase its intake capacity for both the PGDM and PGDCM courses and the number of seats have been increased from 270 to 330.
Besides, the IIMC is all also planning to introduce a new one year residential management programme for working executives from this year, which means it will admit an additional 40 students.
"We have taken the initiative for a couple of years to expand and upgrade our infrastructure so that we can increase the number of seats from this year," acting director of the IIM, Calcutta, Prof Asim Pal said.
"We are continuously upgrading our infrastructure to increase more seats. But this is a long-drawn process and cannot happen overnight. In fact, the infrastructure will not be able to cope if we increase seats beyond our capacity," he said.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur has also increased its intake capacity from this year.
In 2006, IIT, Kharagpur would take 2505 students in UG and PG courses, as compared to 1862 last year.
"We are expanding our infrastructure and capacity. We will add more seats in future," IIT, Kharagpur, director Prof S. K. Dube said.
On the other hand, IIM-Ahmedabad has decided not to increase the number of seats. The institute director B Dholakia had said it was not possible to increase the number as the plate was full.
