Govt plans surplus power generation in North East
Shillong, May 20 (UNI) The Centre is chalking out plans for increased power generation in the North Eastern region that has an estimated hydroelectric power potential of 33,140 MW.
Presently, the North Eastern region generates only 1,178.7 MW.
In anticipation of a massive boost in power generation, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) is drafting a master plan to increase the production and for development of transmission system to transfer surplus power from the North East region, said a government release here today.
Currently, 20 hydroelectric schemes with an aggregate installed capacity of only 1,178.7 MW electricity are in operation. In addition, 89 small hydro schemes with total installed capacity of 152 MW are in operation.
Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) P R Kyndiah, recently said in Lok Sabha that the government was looking into the large power generation potential of the region.
The transmission system may require upgradation for harnessing more generation resources, he said.
