Dry latrines abolished in Ujjain

Bhopal, May 20 (UNI) The age-old practice of carrying nightsoil on heads has ended in Ujjain with the abolition of all 1971 dry latrines in the urban areas.

Under a special drive as part of ''Operation 100 days'' from December 2005 to March 25 this year, an intensive survey was carried out in Ujjain Municipal Corporation, four municipalities and two town panchayats in the district.

Of the total 1971 dry latrines detected in the survey, some latrines were closed and some demolished and the remaining were converted into flush ones, official sources said today.

Municipal and revenue officials besides people's representatives took part in the campaign for abolishing dry latrines.
