US, UK welcomes step to reduce King's power
Kathmandu, May 19: The United States and Britain have welcomed the nine-point declaration of the House of Representatives in Nepal.
''My government is delighted with the House's declaration yesterday,'' The Himalayan Times quoted US ambassador to Nepal James F Moriarty as saying.
The Royal Nepalese Army would not be politicised as it would be under the parliament's control, he said.
British Ambassador to Nepal Keith Bloomfield, said, ''It's a wonderful decision and we support the assembly's announcement.'' The political proclamation, which is described as 'historic' was endorsed by the reinstated House yesterday and has been welcomed by the major political parties, Maoists and general public.
The proclamation has completely limited the role of the King without any powers while the army has been brought under the purview of the parliament.
Meanwhile, the home ministry has given directives to the government offices to remove the word 'His Majesty's' from the sign boards and change it to 'Nepal Government'.
