SC dismisses petition seeking stay against demolition of chawls
New Delhi, May 19 (UNI) The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition seeking stay against the demolition of chawls on the 90 ft long road in Lalmitta Chowk in Mumbai.
A bench comprising Mr Justice B P Singh and Mr Justice R V Raveendran refused to entertain the petition filed by Darshan Residents' Welfare Association seeking to challenge the Mumbai High Court order vide which Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) was given a go ahead for demolition of the chawls built on enclosed public land meant for constructing a road.
The members of the association have already been allotted alternative sites in the slums of Ram Nagar.
The main contention of the petitioners association was that the demolition order had been passed without hearing them.
Counsel for the respondent state of Maharashtra, however, contended that they had been included in the rehabilitation list of slums as per their own wish before the High Court.
