Plastic manufacturers want VAT immediately

Chennai, May 19 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Plastics Manufacturers Association today appealed to the State Government to introduce Value Added Tax (VAT) immediately as delay in its introduction was causing additional burden to manufacturers.

In a statement here, Association General Secretary Brij Khandelwal said the additional levy of four per cent as surcharge over and above reduced customs duty of five per cent was neutralising any benefits. The additional levy would be a burden on manufacturers in Tamil Nadu as VAT had not been introduced in the State.

The State Government's levy of four per cent entry tax on select commodities like plastic raw material was again a severe burden on the industry, especially as there was no set-off facility. He requested the Government to withdraw it immediately.

He wanted SSI exemption limit to be raised to Rs three crore.
