Orissa, Tamil Nadu enter quarterfinals
Bangalore, May 19 (UNI) Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka entered the quarterfinals of the 18th National Sub Junior Girls Hockey Championship being played at the KSHA stadium here today.
Orissa continued their fine form by scoring a thumping 7-0 win over Mizoram to emerge winners from Pool B, while Tamil Nadu prevailed over Uttaranchal 4-1 to top Pool A.
In the other matches, Kerala, in a must win situation to make the grade, scraped through defeating Punjab 1-0 in Pool C, while Karnataka, needing at least a draw to top the group, rallied back after being a goal down at the half time to hold Manipur 1-1 in Pool D.
Yesterday, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh had made the grade with one win apiece as Pool E and F had been reduced to just two teams due to the non arrival of Bhopal and Bihar.
Last year's finalists Jharkhand and Haryana had been seeded directly into the last eight.
In the quarterfinals tomorrow, UP play Haryana, Tamil Nadu face Jharkhand, Orissa take on Kerala and Karnataka meet Delhi.
Following are the results: Final league matches: Pool A: Tamil Nadu 4 bt Uttaranchal 1 (HT 2-0) Scorers: TN: S Rasna, D Saranya, S Muthu Selvi and S Namratha (one each). Uttaranchal: Sikha Bisht (one).
Pool B: Orissa 7 bt Mizoram 0 (4-0). Binitha Xess (3), Sunitha Lakhra (2), Binitha Kindo and Roselin Dung Dung (one each).
Pool C: Kerala 1 bt Punjab 0 (1-0). R Neethu.
Pool D: Karnataka drew with Manipur 1-1 (0-1). Karnataka: B Saba Firdos, Manipur: Kiranmala Devi.
