Man trying to smuggle electronic goods worth Rs 40.92 lakh held
Mumbai, May 19 (UNI) The customs department officials at the Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport have arrested a person for trying to smuggle electronic goods into India.
The accused, who is an Indian national and identified as Kulvitsingh Chandok (38) arrived from Hong Kong by the Cathay Pacific Airways was caught on suspicion at the exit gate of the airport yesterday.
A detailed examination of the accused's bag led to the recovery of electronic goods estimated at Rs 40.92 lakh in the local market, which included Nikon Digital cameras, Canon Lenses, Yes Memory cards, Apple I-Pods, customs sources said.
He was arrested under the Customs Act for trying to evade duty on the electronic goods and admitted to the possession, carriage and non declaration of assorted electronic dutiable goods. He said he was doing this for a monetary consideration on carriage basis.
Further investigations are on, sources said.
