Jute mill closure renders 5000 jobless

Barrackpore, May 19: Nafar Chand Jute Mill at Kankinara under Jagadal Police Station in North 24 Parganas today suspended work indefinitely rendering around 5000 workers jobless.

Police said, the workers went for the morning shift only to realise that the notice of suspension of work has been hung by the management.

This has resulted in 5000 workers, both permanent and casual, losing their job.

Angry workers protested the sudden closure of the mill and put up a blockade at Kankinara railway station distrupting traffic.

However, the blockade was lifted after 45 minutes with intervention from the police.
