IAF bracing up for long-range engagements: Air Chief
Shillong, May 19 (UNI) The Indian Air Force (IAF) is gearing up for acquiring assets conferring the force a longer operational reach, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi said.
''Our aim is not to engage in inter-continental warfare. But we do want to increase our operational capabilities to longer distances,'' he said during an interaction with mediapersons at the Eastern Command (EAC) Headquarters here today.
The Chief of Air Staff was here on a two-day visit to address the EAC Station Commanders' Conference, which started yesterday. He was also supposed t hold discussions with senior officials including EAC's Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Air Marshal F H Major.
''We have been taking steps like procuring mid-air refuellers and trying to increase the endurance level of our pilots. But the fact remains that we don't wish to go and attack a different country,'' ACM Tyagi said.
''Our objective is to build up a strong defence mechanism so that the hostile forces keep away from us,'' he added.
Keeping in view the robust economic growth of the country, the Air Chief said the IAF would play a big role in India's energy, trade and food security.
''India is a growing economic power. We are growing at a robust rate. The IAF will have to ensure energy, trade and food security for the country. Because no country in the world has grown economically without having the military muscle,'' the IAF chief said.
