Kaithal, May 19 (UNI) Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today laid the foundation stone of Rs 15.75 crore Shergarh-Guhna-Link Canal at Francewala village to cater to the needs of the Southern-Western parts of Kaithal district.
The state government had approved the 74,700 ft long channel in line with its commitment to provide equitable distribution of water to all parts of the state for irrigation and drinking purpose, the Chief Minister said.
The channel would carry water, which was already being received by Sirsa branch, through Bhakra main line.
Of the total cost of Rs 15.75 crore, a sum of Rs 8.44 crore would be spent on the construction of the canal while the remaining Rs 4.73 crore lakh would be paid as compensation to the farmers whose land would be acquired, he said.
Irrigation Minister Capt Ajay Singh Yadav said the Southern Western part of the district was solely dependent on Saraswati System Canal for irrigation purposes. Water supply of Shergarh Minor, Kaithal Sub-Minor, Bhanpura Sub-Minor and Guhna Sub-Minor areas were low on the tail of these systems.
He said the area had already witnessed depeletion of ground water and it had become necessary to construct the channel.
