Court sentences Nigerian national to 10 yrs RI

Mumbai, May 19 (UNI) A special court here today convicted a Nigerian woman to suffer ten years rigorous imprisonment for the possession of heroine, seized from her baggage at the Chhatrapati Shivaji international airport here in 2003.

Additional Sessions Judge P B Sawant had found Oluwatoyin Bose Adewale guilty under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and sentenced her to 10 years rigorous imprisonment.

He had also slapped a fine of Rs one lakh, in default of which she would have to undergo another one year jail term.

However, the court acquitted two of her associates -- Caroline Fowokay and Sijuade Owayaluvo Adembinpe -- from the charges under benefit of doubt. Since both are in jail, the court ordered that they be released forthwith, if not required in any other cases.

The court had also ordered to destroy the heroin seized from the accused as per the NDPS procedure and to auction rest of the articles including baggage.
