BSF seizes contraband worth about Rs 70 crores

Kolkata, May 19 (UNI) The BSF seized a large quantity of contraband worth around Rs 70 crores from different areas of the border in Tripura and Assam in April.

Official sources here said troops of the Border Security Force, T C&M (Tripura-Cachar&Mizoram) Frontier seized a large quantity of narcotics, forest produce, cattle heads, sarees and Phensydyl cough syrup worth Rs 69,40,40,238 during April 1 to 30, 2006 from various areas of the border in Tripura and Assam.

Goods worth around Rs 45,000 were seized while being smuggled to Bangladesh and those being smuggled into the country were worth about Rs 25,000 among others, sources added.

The highest figure of seizures smuggled to Bangladesh was timber, ganja, cattle and garments. This was made from Bhanga (District Cachar, Assam), Srimatapur, Kullubari, Dimatoli, Harihadola, Ashabari, Lankamura, Bhagalpur, Dhanpur, (Tripura East) and Ranguri (Tripura West).

During the period the troops apprehended 120 Indian and 97 Bangladeshi nationals on charge of ex-filtration/infiltration from different areas of the borders under T C&M frontier.
