PM assures university and college teachers on 1998 agreement

New Delhi, May 18 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today assured representatives of university and college teachers from across the country that he will do his best to implement the 1998 agreement signed between the government and teachers' organisations on career enhancement steps.

In the light of the assurance All India Federation of University and College Teachers' Organisations and Federation of Central University Teachers Assocations decided to suspend their demonstration that they were undertaking here since May 16, a statement said.

The Prime Minister said he would discuss their case with Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh to see how the cabinet note in respect of Career Advancement Scheme, parity for DPEs and librarians and professorship in colleges could be approved without any further delay.

The teachers, who suspected that the Finance Ministry was blocking the move, expressed satisfaction at the response of the Prime Minister but warned they would renew their agitation if things did not start moving soon.
