Pak informed of ''Sanghe Shakti'': Lt Gen Daljeet Singh

Jalandhar, May 18 (UNI) Western Command's General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) Lt Gen Daljeet Singh said that Pakistan has been duly informed of ongoing army's field exercise ''Sanghe Shakti'' in the western sector.

'Sanghe Shakti,' a two sided exercise to practice offensive operations in developed terrain, is being undertaken to validate the new army doctrine, based on a proactive approach.

Talking to reporters at the field exercise range in western sector last night, Lt Gen Singh said Pakistan had been informed through usual channels of the excercise undertaken by the Kharga Corps.

The army has also taken measures to minimise inconvenience to public in close cooperation with civil administration.

Lt Gen Singh reiterated India's commitment to 'no first use of nuclear, chemical and biological warfares,''but asserted that the country was ready to face any eventuality.

''Field exercises are undertaken by from time to time to keep the army in a fully prepared state,'' he stated.

As part of the ongoing field excercise, as many as 20 Indian Air Force planes took off from four different air bases to para-drop troops and essential equipment for practising ''capture of enemy posts and installations'' at a place in Western sector last night.

Under the mission firstly, two IL-76 aircraft dropped heavy loads and other equipment, including army vehicles, weaponry and other essential artillery items and then 15 AN-32 aircraft made sorties in three batches of five each, to para drop a battalion.

Besides General Singh, the ''Sanghe Shakti'' excercise under the supervision of Kharga Corps, General Officer Commanding(GOC) Lt Gen K D S Shekhawat is being witnessed by Western Air Command's Air Officer Commanding in Chief Air Marshal AK Singh, and other senior officers.

About 20,000 troops, 350 tanks along with specialist vehicles and more then 70 aircraft are taking part in the exercise which began on May 15 and will conclude on May 20.

Chief of Army Staff General JJ Singh is scheduled to witness the exercise tomorrow.
