New Delhi, May 18 (UNI) Members of Parliament from Tripura, today met Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and apprised him of the various issues related to the international border fencing with Bangladesh.

The three MPs, during their meeting pointed out that Tripura shared 856 km long border with Bangladesh but the Centre sanctioned the border fencing only on 736 km. About 120 km of the border have been left out, which is said to be used by terrorists.

They urged Mr Patil to take up a composite project work, including construction of fence and roads in the areas at the earliest.

While informing Mr Patil about the allegation of poor quality of fencing work in some of the stretches, they demanded that a high-power team, comprising technical experts should be sent to Tripura immediately for conducting inspection.

Apart from this, the members pointed out that as a result of the fence erection, homes as well as agricultural land of a large number of families has been fallen outside the fencing. These families need to be resettled.

They informed that the Tripura government has already sent a proposal for the sanction of Rs 93 crores for the rehabilitation of these displaced families. The state government had also agreed to bear 10 per cent share of the cost of resettlement, they added.

Mr Patil later assured the delegation that a team would check the allegations of poor quality of fencing and based on their report, action would be taken. On the issue of fencing on the remaining 120 km of border, he said the matter would be looked into and he would direct the authorities concerned to take steps.

He noted the issue of resettlement of families affected due to fencing would be sent to Finance Department and then an appropriate action would be sought.

The members requested Mr Patil for extending mobile telephone services to the entire state. On that, Mr Patil said the matter would be re-examined and as far as possible, it would be considered.

The delegation of MP's consisted of Khagen Das, Bajuban Riyan and Matilal Sarkar.
