Srinagar, May 18 (UNI) The historical Mughal Road, which forms an alternative link between Jammu and Srinagar, will become operational in next the three years time.

This was stated by Minister of State for Roads and Buildings Gulchain Singh Charak here.

He said work on the Mughal Road was in progress from both Shopian and Bafliaz sides.

Mr Charak said Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had already given instructions that the construction work on the Mughal road should be completed within three years.

The work during the past 40 years was either being stopped or taken up on account of financial constraints, he said, adding this year the Hindustan Construction Corporation (HCC) has been assigned the job on turnkey basis.

Mr Charak was told that the work from Heerpur to Dubjan, which was halted due to non-lifting of tress, would be completed within one-and-a half month and the road from Heerpur to Alipur will be made motorable by the end of this summer.

The work was on in full swing from Poonch-Bafliaz side where 17 km of road had been made motorable during the past three months and up to 35 km by this season.

The Chief Minister had already released Rs 80 crore for the construction of the road during the current fiscal.

The work on road had started in early eighties and only 18 km were completed during the past 25 years as compared to 10 km in the past three months.

With the completion of the road, the total distance from Poonch and Rajouri to Srinagar will be 175 km and 200 km respectively.

The Minister said the historical background of the road was expected to attract a large number of tourists.
