Panaji, May 18 (UNI) Football fans today strongly opposed the move of the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) to convert the Campal football ground into an expensive and highly polluting Go-Karting course.

In a letter to Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane, the fans led by Dr Rufino Monteiro besides Rajya Sabha member Mr Shantaram Naik, urged the CM to retain the ground for rebuilding the football stadium, which was razed in the year 2004 as part of infrastructure development for the first International Film Festival of India held in the city.

Two such courses are already available in Goa and the move be nipped in the bud as go-karting pollutes the clean atmosphere at Campal with cars used in the game.

They, in a signature campaign, had also further urged Rane to rebuild the football stadium as promised earlier even as budgetary allocation had already been made for the purpose.

''It is the home ground of two of the best football teams of India- Dempo SC and Sporting Club de Goa. It was due to this ground that Goa had produced football heroes who made a great mark in Indian football,'' they said.
