Kochi, May 17: Yamaha Motors India Sales Pvt Ltd. today launched its latest motor cycle 'Gladiator' in the Kerala market and announced that it was targeting to triple its market share of five per cent nationally in the next five years.

Addressing a press conference here ahead of the launch, Mr D Anjan, Regional Business Head (Kerala and Tamil Nadu), said that the 4 stroke, 125 cc, 5 speed bike was targeted at youngsters looking for a new lifestyle.

Styled as a sporty yet sturdy vehicle, the 'Gladiator' is priced at Rs 41,990 while its variant Gladiator DX is priced at Rs 44,990.

The vehicle would give a mileage of 67 KMPL, he said.

''Our target customers are very clear. We are aiming at youngsters (under 24 years) in urban markets, who are focused and ambitious and aspire to live a 24X7 life. The user group will be young students and executives,'' Mr Anjan said.

To specifically reach out to its target group, Yamaha would be adopting a new marketing strategy, which would include field promotions followed by rock concerts in 27 cities across India. In Kerala, the promotions would be held in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.

Stating that 'Gladiator' was the first in a series of new products being launched by Yamaha in India, Mr Anjan said the company was targeting to triple its market share of five per cent nationally (12 per cent in Kerala) in the next five years.

The market for two wheelers was expected to grow at about 50 per cent, from six million unit sales in 2005 to 11 million units in 2010.

Yamaha India had sold 250,000 units last year and was targeting sales of 350,000 units this year, including 50,000 units of the Gladiator, he added.
