Chennai, May 17 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu government today announced that boiled eggs would be supplied to children in noon meal centres on Tuesdays and Fridays in a week.

After Chief Minister M Karunanidhi announced that eggs would be supplied to the children twice in a week, fulfilling his poll promise, soon after assuming office on May 13, the state cabinet, which met yesterday, decided that eggs should be given to the children on Tuesdays and Fridays, an official release here said.

Presently, the children were getting eggs once in a week and the new scheme would come into effect from June 16, coinciding with the birth anniversary of late Chief Minister K Kamaraj, who had introduced the noon meal scheme for the first time in the state.

The cabinet also decided that the self help groups in the state would be given financial assistance to run poultry and the eggs should be procured from them.

Besides the existing women self help groups, new groups would be formed and men self help groups would also be encouraged to take up poultry in a big way, the release added.
