Huge potential for power generation from wastes: Muttemwar

New Delhi, May 17 (UNI) Minister for Non-Conventional Energy Sources Vilas Muttemwar today said various core industries such as sugar, fertilizers and distilleries have the potential to produce 15,000 MW of power through co-generation and from the huge quantities of wastes caused by rapid urbanisation and industrialisation.

Industrial and urban wastes alone could generate about 2700 MW of power which would increase to 7000 MW by 2017, the Minister said after releasing a booklet on "Green Energy from Wastes" and a newsletter "Industrial Co-generation India".

The booklet, prepared by his Ministry, gives details of the demonstration projects installed under a project on ''Development of High Rate Biomethanation Processes as a means of reducing Green House Gases Emission''. The project was implemented by the Ministry with partial financial support from United Nations Development Programme and Global Environment Facility.

As part of the project, 14 full-scale demonstration projects from a variety of wastes have been set up in the country.

The quarterly newsletter ''Industrial Co-generation India'' has been published by Cogeneration Association of India, with support from the Ministry.

UN Resident Co-ordinator&UNDP Resident representative Dr Maxine Olson and Non-Conventional Energy Sources Secretary Mr V Subramanian, also spoke on the occasion.
