Transform Kashmir as Silican Valley

Srinagar, May 17 : Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has called for measures to transform Kashmir valley as India's Silicon Valley by popularising and developing the information technology sector.

He also directed for creating the necessary infrastructure for all the newly set-up degree colleges and the industrial training institutes to ensure quality education and introduction of subjects having great marketing potential for youth.

Mr Azad said the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) launched in the state would help in providing better health facilities in the rural areas of the state.

At a high-level meeting to review implementation of the Prime Minister's reconstruction programme here last evening, he said Rs 65 crore have been earmarked for NRHM during the current fiscal.

The government was keen to provide modern healthcare facilities in the rural areas, the Chief Minister said, adding the programme of developing 119 model villages with all basic amenities, was innovative and transforming rural areas into prosperous ones.

He said tourism being the mainstay of economic of the state demanded focussed attention at all levels. ''As such, the government is concentrating on restoration of glory of tourist places, open up new areas, give boost to piligrimage tourism and create infrastructure for international visitors,'' Mr Azad added.

He said skiing, rafting, swimming, mountaineering and other adventure tourism activities were also being promoted.

The Chief Minister directed for taking up of schemes under the Asian Development Bank (ADB) funding and working on double shifts to complete all important projects within shortest possible time.

He said the inter-district connectivity was sine qua non for economic prosperity of under-developed and remote areas.

Thrust has been given on construction and upgradation of important inter-district and inter-provincial routes such Mughal road, Domail-Katra road, Batote-Kishtwar-Simthan-Anantnag road, Srinagar-Uri-Kaman Post road, Khannabal-Pahalgam road, Srinagar-Leh National Highway and Jammu-Srinagar alternate highway.
