Delhi to generate power from waste
New Delhi, May 17 (UNI) Delhi government aims to kill two birds with one stone by deriving electricity from the huge amounts of refuse generated in the national capital.
Delhi Ministry of Power was gearing up to launch a strategy to convert waste into energy by giving the power-starved city as many as 90 MW of extra energy while helping treat the waste before it got into river Yamuna.
State Power Minister Haroon Yusuf was upbeat about the project that would be funded by the UN and Delhi government would just have to provide land for it.
Power producing units would become operational within six months at three Sewage Treatment Plants already functional in Delhi while six other units at STPs yet to be constructed were to become functional in 24 months.
However, the power so produced by such a process would cost around Rs 3.50 to Rs 3.75 per unit compared to Rs 2 to Rs 2.5 per unit by conventional methods.
