Panaji, May 17 (UNI) South Goa MP Churchil Alemao today demanded the Goa government should provide rice and sugar at subsidised rates to the poor through the public distribution system.

Talking on the sidelines of his 57th birthday celebrations at Varca late last evening in the presence of Governor S C Jamir and Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane, he said he considered politics as ''an effective tool to serve the people in a better way.'' He was earlier greeted by the Governor, CM and his cabinet colleagues and several legislators on his birthday.

Appreciating Churchil's leadership qualities in guiding and helping the ''sons of the soil'', the Governor urged the political leadership to help maintain communal harmony and amity, besides honesty and transperancy in political life.

Mr Alemao, the former chief minister, was in the eye of a storm following a campaign he had launched against the proposed Mopa airport in North Goa.

He was recently exonerated by the Parliament for his involvement in MPLAD scheme scam.
