Kozhikode, May 16 : With the crowning of CPI (M) Politbureau member V S Achuthanandan as the new Kerala Chief Minister on May 18, Malabar region, the citadel of the Left movement, loses the monopoly over Communist chief ministership of the state.

Popularly known as V S, the veteran leader hails from Alappuzha, one of the southern districts, whereas the other Communist Chief ministers -- party ideologue late E M S Namboodiripad (two terms) and late E K Nayanar (three terms) -- belonged to Malappuram and Kannur districts respectively, both in the Malabar region.

E M S headed the first Communist government in the state from April 5, 1957 to 31 July 1959 and from March 6, 1967 to November 1, 1969.

His government was dismissed by the then Unionm Government on July 31, 1957 and replaced by Pattam Thanu Pillai of the Praja Socialist Party.

Party stalwart Nayanar, with three terms, served the state from January 25, 1980 to October 21, 1981, March 26, 1987 to June 24, 1991 and May 20, 1996 to May 10, 2001, thus becoming the longest serving top executive of the state.
