Panaji, May 16 (UNI) Goa Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for extension of the six-member committee to study the need for setting up a state of the-art airport at Mopa in North Goa.

In his post-Cabinet interaction with media persons here today, Mr Rane said initiating measures to strengthen the existing airport at Dabolim in South Goa did not mean closure of the Mopa issue as the committee was yet to submit its report to the Prime Minister.

The term of the committee, headed by Mr Rane himself, has expired and it has sought a six-month extension and also urged for inclusion of experts to assist it in arriving at a final decision whether to build the Mopa airport or not.

Regarding the proposed six-lane express highway to serve as a North-South corridor in Goa, the Chief Minister dismissed apprehensions that it would displace over one lakh people.

''It is mere fallacy to say this and those who are opposing this project are anti-people. We had surveyed the area and the infrastructure would go a long way in developing the state,'' he said.

For the proposed monorail project, Mr Rane said the government had shortlisted a consultant recently and the work would go ahead as scheduled to link the capital with major cities and towns on the existing roads.

The government would also initiate a proposal to build a four-lane parallel bridge on Zuari river as the existing one that links the South Goa has outlived its utility, Mr Rane said.
