New Delhi, May 16 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said a broad-based National Committee will be set up to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the First War of Independence of 1857 "in a big way." Dr Singh's statement was in response to a letter dated May 12 by Leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani containing several suggestions to commemorate the anniversary in a befitting manner.

In a letter, the Prime Minister said that the Department of Culture was in the process of setting up the broad-based committee for the purpose.

Setting up of a national committee to oversee the commemoration of the anniversary was one of the suggestions Mr Advani had forwarded to the Prime Minister in his letter.

Agreeing with Mr Advani that the 150th anniversary of 1857 marked one of the milestones "in our journey to Independence," Dr Singh also offered that Mr Advani be one of the honoured members of the National Committee.

He said as soon as the committee was constituted he would also discuss the suggestions forwarded to him by Mr Advani for possible consideration.

In his letter, Mr Advani while underscoring the importance of the 1857 war in history, had said that it is a reminder of the need to strengthen patriotic unity among all the people of the country.

Besides, Mr Advani had also suggested that the Prime Minister write to the heads of Pakistan and Bangladesh to explore the possibility of a joint commemoration of the War of 1857.
