Pondy AIADMK stakes claim for Leader of Oppn post

Pondicherry, May 15 (UNI) Pondicherry AIADMK Secretary A Anbazhagan today urged Lt Governor M M Lakhera to grant the status of Leader of the Opposition in the Territorial Assembly to the AIADMK Legislature Party Leader In a memorandum to Governor, Mr Anbazhagan said the DMK, PMK and CPI had extended unconditional support to the Congress to form government in the union territory and hence could not be considered as Opposition parties. According to his information, the DMK was going to stake claim for the status.

The role of opposition was crucial. Granting the status to the DMK was against the principles of Parliamentary democracy, he said and urged Lt Gen Lakhera to issue suitable instructions to the Legislative Assembly Secretariat to recognise the AIADMK Legislature Party Leader as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.

Meanwhile, AIADMK High Command had appointed Mr Anbazhagan as the legilsature party leader and Mr Omalingam as party whip.
