Quota: IMA demands inquiry into police brutality

Mumbai, May 14: Indian Medical Association (IMA), Mumbai chapter has demanded a judicial inquiry into yesterday's lathicharge by the police on medical students protesting outside Raj Bhavan in South Mumbai.

IMA-Mumbai spokesman Sunita Kshisagar told UNI that their demands included suspension and arrest of police officials who the lathicharge within 24 hours and a judicial inquiry into the incident. The report should be made available in 48 hours, she added.

She said IMA also wanted President A P J Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and the Health Minister to make a statement on the ''inhuman act'' by the Mumbai police.

Federation of Medical Associations has organised a 'dharna' at Azad Maidan tommorrow at 1400 hrs from where the members wearing black badges will march to Mantralaya to meet Mr Deshmukh and submit a memorandum of their demands.
