Chennai, May 13: Six AIADMK workers lost their life after the party was defeated in the May 8 Assembly polls, four of them having sudden heart attacks while the other two allegedly committed suicide.

Those who were unable to bear the shock of the loss and suffered cardiac failure in the last two days were AIADMK functionary C Balamurugan, 43, of Kovilpatti, Kalimuthu, 50, of Coimbatore District, Munusamy, 37, of Coimbatore AIADMK and Kannammal, 53, a woman functionary in Dharmapuri District, police said.

Meanwhile, Vasanthi, running an idly shop in Vyasarpadi in North Chennai and a staunch supporter of the AIADMK and its leader J Jayalalalithaa became depressed after hearing of the party's defeat.

The 43-old-woman broke into tears and did not interact even with her family. Despite their best attempts to console her, she poured kersosene on herself and set herself ablaze yesterday. She succumbed to burns in the hospital.

In her handwritten suicide note addressed to AIADMK supremo Ms Jayalalithaa, she asked her not to lose heart. She said, ''we know pretty well how much you are feeling about the party's defeat, and I cannot tolerate it. I am able to give only my life to you.'' In a note to her husband Gopal, secretary of the local MGR Mandram, she said she was unable to see the sorrowful face of Ms Jayalalithaa, so she was leaving the world.

In a similar incident, 39-year-old party office-bearer Gemini Ganesan allegedly killed himself by ingesting poison at Telugumatrapallli village in Vellore District yesterday.
