Life imprisonment for Gram Raskhi for killing wife

Baripada, May 13 (UNI) A local court here was convicted and sentence 40-year-old man, serving as Gram Rakshi in a police station to life imprisonment for killing his wife.

Mayurbhanj District and Sessions Judge Harihar Satpathy yesterday convicted Sadhu Charan Mahanto, posted at the Karanjia police station, for killing wife Basanti.

According to the prosecution, Sadhu and Basanti tied the nuptial knot after falling in love. They registered their marriage in the Baripada court in 1996 and were staying at Karanjia.

The Gram Raskhi, however, proposed to marry a second time as Basanti had lost her eyesight. Enraged at her objection, Sadhu Charan throttled her to death on the night of April 5 last year. He then took the body to the bank of Budi river and buried it.

Sadhu later told his elder brother that Basanti had committed suicide. After the elder sibling lodged an FIR at Karanjia police station on April 8,the Karanjia police retrieved the body from the bank of river and sent it for post-mortem examination.

The post-mortem report revealed that Basanti was strangled.

The Grama Raskhi was arrested for killing his wife and faced sessions trial in the court.

Sadhu Charan was convicted under section 302 IPC and sentenced for life. He was also further convicted under section 201 IPC for concealing evidences and sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for four years. Both the sentences will run concurrently, the court ordered.
