41 Indians rescued from Jordan; return home

Chennai, May 13: Forty-one Indians who went to Jordan for tailoring jobs through a private manpower agency arrived here today after they were rescued from penury and suffering.

Official sources said the Indians hailed from Thiruthuraipoondi, Kumbakonam and Ramanathapuram districts. They were recruited by a private travel-cum-manpower agency in Thiruthuraipoondi after collecting Rs one lakh from each of them. They were sent to Jordan on July 12 last year. Only after they reached there did they realise they had been cheated.

Their employer refused to pay salary regularly and deprived them of proper food and accommodation too. They told their relatives of their plight and their family members approached the External Affairs Ministry. The Ministry asked the Indian High Commission in Jordan to ensure that they returned safely.

The 41 employees returned by Gulf Airways and were received by officials at the Anna International Airport here. Later they were sent to their destinations by bus and train, the sources added.
