College student held for extortion
Barrackpore, May 13 (UNI) A first year BA student of Dum Dum Motijheel College in North 24 Parganas was arrested for alleged involvement in extortion cases, according to police.
Police said the accused was arrested along with a firearm and ammunition from his Promodgarh residence under Rajarhat police station. He was later produced before the court yesterday and remanded in judicial custody.
The accused was allegedly involved with a gang of miscreants of Barrackpore industrial area, which extorted money from businessmen.
The student was arrested as he was threatening a number of businessmen, demanding money over telephone. Police intercepted the telephone calls and detected the booth from where he used to threaten the businessmen.
Police said the student belonged to a poor mason-helper family and got involved with the gang which promised him Rs 25,000 for setting up his own business.
