NHRC seeks comment from Chhattisgarh govt on Manikonta incident

New Delhi, May 12 (UNI) Taking suo-motu cognisance of media reports about the killing of 15 villagers in Chhattisgarh by naxalites, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought comments from the state government on the incident, within two weeks.

The Commission has directed that a copy of the press report about the April 29 incident be sent to Chhattisgarh Chief Secretary.

''If the contents of the news reports are true, it raises serious issue of violation of human rights,'' a NHRC statement said.

The reports said the villagers staying in Dornapal relief camp were abducted by the naxalites when they had gone to check on their belongings in Manikonta village. They had been participating in a peace campaign against the naxals in Dantewada and Bijapur districts.
