Man, mother duo sentenced to 5 yrs RI

Akola, May 12 (UNI) A local court has sentenced a man and his mother to five years rigorous imprisonment for abetting his wife to commit suicide in Khadan locality here in 2003.

Delivering the sentence last evening, Additional Sessions Judge S R Trivedi held Prakash Damodar and his mother Anusaya guilty under section 306 of Indian Penal Code for driving his 27-year-old wife Seema to commit suicide under physical and mental duress.

The judge also awarded two years rigorous imprisonment to the mother and son duo under section 498 A (cruelty against women) of IPC.

The court also ordered them to pay fine of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 each.

Additional Public Prosecutor said that Seema, who had become fed up of continuous harassment by her husband and mother-in-law for dowry, committed suicide in the wee hours of April 27, 2003.
