New Delhi, May 12 (UNI) India today said it is for the US Administration to ensure the passage of the appropriate legislation in the Congress to enable the civilian nuclear energy agreement get through.

''We have been looking at how the agreement goes in the US Congress. It is for the US Administration to ensure passage of the appropriate legislation in US Congress to enable the civilian nuclear energy cooperation based on reciprocal understanding reached on July 18,'' a spokesman of the External Affairs Ministry said in response to a question.

The spokesman was commenting on the observation made by senior Congressman Tom Lantos on Thursday about his plan to introduce a ''compromise'' legislative proposal to prompt a divided US Congress to support the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Mr Lantos, however, said he would come forward with his proposal only after the US-India agreement and India's safeguards pact with the IAEA are submitted to the Congress.
