Anjolie Ela Menon's paintings exhibition in the US

New Delhi, May 12: In what can be seen as another example of Indian contemporary Art winning international recognition, an exhibition of paintings by renowned Indian artist Anjolie Ela Menon is to open at the Asian Art Museum in the US, one of the great art museums of the world, next week.

Anjolie Ela menon has been honoured with a six-month solo at the museum, featuring her large triptych entitled 'Yatra'.

The art works to be displayed at the exhibition, which opens in the museum at San Francisco on May 20, are inspired by the annual march of kavadiyas to the holy Ganga, where they gather in millions each year during Shravan to collect water in pots to carry back to their village shrines for worship of Lord Shiva, sometimes walking barefoot for as long as 500 miles.

A simultaneous exhibition of her work will be held at gallery ArtsIndia, Palo Alto.

Anjolie Ela Menon, who is among the most important artists in the current contemporary Indian Art scene, said,''if the exhibition brings some honour to India and creates an awareness about Indian Contemporary Art, it will be an important milestone for me.'' One of India's best known artists, Anjolie Ela Menon, whose first solo exhibition in 1958 won her praise from renowned critic Richard Bartholomew, has also been a recipient of the prestigious Padamshree award.
